One of the most underrated home pests is the silverfish, also called the fishmoth. Its walking movement somewhat resemble the movement of a fish.
It is also a metallic or silvery color but can also be light grey or light blue in color. Silverfish are teardrop-shaped, brown-grey or blue-silver insects that measure 12-19 mm in length. They have three long bristles on their rear and grow from egg to adult without a visible change in their appearance. There are three common silverfish species in North America.
Silverfish have been known to live for up to a year or more without food. However, since they will east almost anything, food is almost always present. They will eat most things found in a typical home including hair, dandruff, carpet, clothing, paper, books, photos, sugar, coffee, and food crumbs. They will also eat silk, linen, and cotton clothing. They are also known to eat synthetic fabrics nd leather when other food is harder to find. They feed on carbohydrates like sugars and starches. Dead insects, cellulose, shampoo, and glue in books are other food sources.
Silverfish are able to survive in most environments; however, they prefer dark, damp areas like attics, basements, kitchens and bathrooms. They’re particularly drawn to paper and damp clothing. You might also find silverfish hiding in boxes, garages and sheds.
Silverfish are nocturnal so when one or more is spied inside a home there are usually many more in hiding. They have lifespans that range from two to eight years. They are nocturnal, speedy and secretive, and can go unnoticed for a long period of time. Paired with a silverfish’s quick reproduction and long life span, this allows for a large infestation and plenty of time to cause damage.
A clean, well-ventilated home is the best silverfish prevention method.
- Open vents in crawl spaces.
- In basements, use baseboards with caulking.
