Skunks in Houston
There are several species of skunks in Texas: the Striped Skunk, the Spotted Skunk and the Hog Nosed Skunk.
Ranging in size from 12 inches to 28 inches long, they can weigh from 2 to 14 pounds. Skunks are black with white striping that varies from specie to specie. They have a small head, thick torso, short legs and bushy tails with stripes. They are good climbers.
Skunks have good eyesight and good hearing and prefer to feed on insects, small rodents, garbage, birds and their eggs, fruits and berries. They will nest in logs, burrows, under buildings and in attics.
Their importance as pests includes digging holes in lawns (searching for food) they will invade poultry houses; they knock over garbage cans, enter and set up a den in attics or in the crawl space of a pier & beam home. When confronted or cornered they will readily spray attackers with a nauseating odor from the anal glands that may cause eye pain and temporary blindness and it is the prime carrier of rabies in Texas.
