Squirrels
There are several species of squirrels: Gray, Red, Fox and Flying squirrels.
They range from 3 inches to 20 inches long and they vary in color from red to black depending upon the species. They have a small head, a long slender torso with a bushy tail and the rodent typical large incisor teeth.
They can breed throughout the year with 2 litters per year consisting of 1 to 6 per litter. Their senses are more acute than rats and mice and they prefer feeding on acorns, pecans, seeds, insects, berries, bird eggs and small mammals.
While rats and mice are nocturnal, Squirrels are diurnal, which means they are active during the daylight hours. They will nest in trees, attics, cornices and are excellent climbers.
Squirrels can cause extensive damage to a home as they nest and multiply. They may store acorns and other food stuffs under the insulation in an attic and chew through HVAC ducts in an effort to build a nest. There have been several documented cases of a home burning down as a result of electrical shorts caused by gnawing squirrels.
