Termites in Conroe, Texas

Just hearing the word "termites" is enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.

These tiny pests are destructive. In fact, they cause millions of dollars’ worth of damage every year all throughout the United States. And, they are one of the hardest pests to destroy.

The regular pest control products you buy at the store just won’t cut it. Oftentimes, you might think they have done the job, only to realize that the problem is still there.

If you have discovered termites in your Conroe, Texas home, Gulf Coast Exterminators are the ones to call at (281) 449-7404.

What are Termites?

Termites are tiny, yet destructive, insects subsist on a cellulose based diet.

In other words, they eat wood. And they eat a lot of it, very quickly.

But just because your home is made of materials other than wood, doesn’t mean that you are immune to an infestation; termites can take up residence in any type of home.

Conroe Termite Inspection & Termite Control Video: What Are Termites?

Termites are social creatures, their colonies divided up into three distinct classes, each with their own specific jobs. The smallest, and most important, class consists of the king and queen termite.

These termites are responsible for populating the colony. Below them are the soldiers, who are responsible for the colony’s defense.

At the bottom is the largest group, the workers. The worker termites are responsible for making tunnels, feeding all other members of the colony and taking care of termite eggs and larvae.

What Do Termites Look Like?

It is easy for termites to go undetected for quite some time.

Usually they are discovered accidentally, unless you are actively looking for them. Termites are extremely small, measuring anywhere between ¼ to ½ inch long at full size.

The king and the queen tend to be the largest members of a colony. Workers, specifically, are soft-bodied, and range in color from white to light brown (the king and queen are usually even darker in color).

Conroe Termite Inspection & Termite Control Video: What Do Termites Look Like?

Their antennae are straight, which helps to distinguish them from ants, who have bent antennae. Another few key differences between ants and termites include their midsection (ants have pinched waists, while termites are straight) and their wings.

They both have four wings, but ants have two large and two small wings, while swarming termites (the only time they have wings) have wings that are all the same size.

What’s The Life Cycle of Termites in Conroe, Texas?

Much like any other insect, termites hatch from eggs.

When they hatch, they emerge as larvae. On their way to adulthood, these larvae undergo a series of molts.

The number of molts a termite undergoes determines its class. One molt turns a larva into a worker termite.

A second molt turns a worker into a soldier. If the need arises, a soldier can actually molt in reverse and become a worker.

Conroe Termite Inspection & Termite Control Video: Termite Life Cycle and Other Information

When spring arrives, it’s time for the termites to swarm, or go out in search of a new home and start a new colony. During this time, some of the worker termites molt into winged termites, known as alate termites.

The alate termites leave their current colonies and fly off in search of a mate. When they find one, they locate a suitable new home and settle down to start their new colonies.

What Types of Termites Are There in Conroe, Texas?

There are over 2,000 different species of termites.

Of those 2,000 termites, there are three types that are the most common: subterranean termites, drywood termites and dampwood termites.

Conroe Termite Control

Horrible termite damage to a home in Conroe Texas, call termite control and termite inspection specialists Gulf Coast Exterminators to prevent this from happening

There are three extremely invasive species of subterranean termite. The Eastern subterranean termite is the most prevalent of these three species.

It is found all over the east coast, in states such as Florida and Georgia, and even as far west as Utah. It can also be found in Texas.

The Western subterranean termite, as suggested by its name, is found up and down the west coast, inland as far as Nevada. The Formosan subterranean termite can be found all over the southern United States, and is not quite as common as the other two species.

Despite being less common, it is exceptionally more destructive. No matter what the species of the subterranean termite, all of these termites need to have contact with the ground in order to survive.

They build their homes underground, while creating tunnels to, and then into, your home.

Drywood termites can be found throughout the United States, although they are particularly common in the south, including southern California, Florida and Texas. Unlike subterranean termites, these termites don’t need to have contact with the ground for survival.

Instead, they derive all of the moisture they need out of the wood they eat. They build their colonies right into the wood (right into the walls of your home!) and can even have multiple colonies right in the same structure.

Dampwood termites are frequently found in the northern Pacific region, in northern California and Oregon. They can, sometimes, be found is the south as well.

These particular termites don’t usually inhabit homes. Instead, they prefer extremely damp environments, such as dead or dying trees, stumps or branches.

On the rare occasion, they do make their way into your home is if you have wood that is resting on damp soil that is leaning against your home, or if you have significant water damage within your home, such as a burst pipe that hasn’t been properly cleaned up.

What do Termites Eat in Conroe, Texas?

Termites eat cellulose based plant materials, mainly wood.

And they eat it all day. They are frequently referred to as the "silent destroyer" because they eat away at floorboards, walls and even wallpaper completely undetected. The main food source for termites is dead plants and trees, but they may also feast upon other materials as well, such as plastic or drywall.

Some species will even take on a living tree.

Conroe Termite Control

Termites eat wood, call Conroe termite control and termite inspection experts Gulf Coast Exterminators to prevent this damage

Each species of termite has their own specific dietary preferences. Subterranean termites have a vast diet, as do drywood termites, which consists of mostly wood, but they also eat plant based fabrics, wallpaper and even plastic.

Dampwood termites prefer extremely damp wood.

What is a Termites Ideal Habitat?

Most termites are found dying trees, lumber left outdoors, in the earth and, of course, in homes.

Subterranean termites, which can be found in areas all throughout the United States, need to have contact with the earth in order to survive. Their colonies are usually located underground, and they construct tunnels to reach their food source.

Conroe Termite Inspection & Termite Control Video: Habitat of a Termite

Dampwood and drywood termites, on the other hand, are much more common in southern states, including the state of Texas. Dampwood termites need a lot of moisture.

For this reason, they are frequently found in damp wood outside, or in homes with leaking pipes. Drywood termites don’t require contact with the soil or moisture, and, as their name suggests, are found in dry wood.

How Do You Know You Have Termites in Your Conroe, Texas Home or Business?

Identifying termites can be rather difficult.

For one, they are quite small, and completely silent. You won’t hear these insects munching or skittering around in the walls or floorboards of your home.

And they don’t really like to make their way outside of their tunnels. They prefer to stay hidden, deep within your house, working diligently away at their tasks.

They can often go unnoticed for years. It’s more likely that you come across signs of their presence before you actually see the insects themselves. So, how exactly can you know that you have them?

Conroe Termite Inspection & Termite Control Video: Aggressive Termite Soldiers

One sign that you might have termites is by finding discarded wings outside of entry points to your house, such as around windows, door frames or vents. Make sure you pay attention to the size of the wings.

If they are different sizes, they are ant wings, however, if they are all the same size, then that points to termites.

A second sign of termites is by finding mud tubes either on the outside of your home or within your basement or crawlspace. The tubes serve the purpose of keeping heat and humidity (which termites like) in, and the cooler air out.

Sometimes, when you break one of the tubes open, you can see termites running through. Empty ones don’t necessarily mean that you don’t have a termite problem; it can often mean that the tunnel has simply been abandoned.

A third sign, and one of the more obvious signs, is seeing wood damage to your home. This can present itself in a variety of forms.

However, if you start to see changes in your structure, this often means significant, and expensive, damage has been done. Because of the tunnels that termites chew through your wood, they destroy the structural integrity of your home.

You may notice hollow sounds when you rap on the walls. Severe damage can present itself in the form of sagging floorboards and ceilings.

Conroe Termite Inspection & Termite Control Video: Horrible Termite Wood Damage

Of course, the most obvious sign of termites is actually seeing them scurrying around your home. And just because you only see one, don’t assume that you don’t have a problem.

One termite often means that thousands lurk within your walls, making contacting a professional for an accurate identification absolutely critical.

What Happens if You Don’t Have Termite Control or a Termite Inspection Done?

Never ignore signs of termites.

Just because you’ve only noticed them recently doesn’t mean they are a new problem. Termites can spend years destroying the structure of your home without you even knowing it. And they can do a lot of damage in a very short period of time.

Video of a severe termite infestation

Every day you ignore the issue, you risk serious issues, such as the collapse of parts of your home. Subterranean termites can even go so far as to destroy your foundation, eating away at subfloors, plastic plumbing and insulation. The longer you put off calling Gulf Coast Exterminators, the more expensive your repairs are going to be.

Why You Need Professional Help for Termite Control & Termite Inspections by Gulf Coast Exterminators

Termites are nothing like other common household pests.

A simple insecticide isn’t going to take care of your problem. Unfortunately, it is a much more complex procedure to get rid of them, and the professionals at Gulf Coast Exterminators are just the people to do it for you.

We have extensive training and knowledge in how to identify the species of termite that has invaded your Conroe home, as well as locate the colony.

Termidor Termite Control by Gulf Coast Exterminators

Termidor is a highly effective treatment for ridding homes of termites.

It is highly effective against all three of the most common types of termites – subterranean, drywood and dampwood. It is completely undetectable to the insects.

Once it is applied, the termites will walk right through it, completely unaware that they have stepped into anything. Termidor sticks to their bodies and they carry it everywhere they go, including right back to the main colony, passing it along to all other termites they come in contact with.

Conroe Termite Inspection & Termite Control Video: Termites Devouring Wood

Is Termidor Termite Control Safe?

Termidor is completely safe, and very effective, when applied correctly by a Termidor Certified Professional.

In fact, only those who are certified may apply it. Done correctly, it is safe for use in and around homes with pets and children, and is EPA registered.

It can be used successfully for both homes and commercial buildings alike. The USDA Forest Service has done studies that show no termite damage to covered slab plots 15 years following an initial treatment.

Typically, after Termidor is diluted, it is applied around the foundation of your home, however, if the damage is severe enough, we may recommend treatment indoors at active sites. It can also be used as a preventative measure around the perimeter of your house.

Treatment takes only a day, and starts working right away.

Just because you only now notice signs of termite damage doesn’t mean they haven’t been there for quite some time. When it comes to these tiny insects, don’t mess around.

Gulf Coast Exterminators will come out to your home, identify the issue and start treatment right away. Give us a call today to schedule your consultation (281) 449-7404!
